Hidden costs at the gym — what you really pay

Updated: 11.06.2026

"Only €19.90 a month!" — figures like that are on every gym poster. What actually leaves your account is almost always more. We'll show you which building blocks make up the real price and how to work it out yourself in a minute.

The four hidden cost blocks

1. Joining fee. One-off at contract start, often €20–50. Never mentioned in the teaser price.

2. Service or administration charge. Often due semi-annually (e.g. €20 every 6 months). Over two years it adds up noticeably. More on this in detail.

3. Training or starter package. A one-off mandatory fee for the induction/chip, sometimes €30–80.

4. Minimum term. Locks you in — usually 12 or 24 months. The longer the commitment, the more one-off costs are spread out, but the higher the risk of paying for an unused membership too.

A worked example

Advertised: €19.90/month, 24-month term. Plus:

  • + €30 joining fee (one-off)
  • + €20 service charge × 4 half-years = €80
  • + €50 training package (one-off)

Total cost: €19.90 × 24 + €30 + €80 + €50 = €637.60

Real monthly cost: €637.60 ÷ 24 = €26.57/month — a third more than advertised.

Frequently asked questions

What are the hidden costs at a gym?
On top of the advertised monthly membership there are usually: a one-off joining fee, a service or administration charge (often semi-annual), a mandatory training or starter package, and the commitment of the minimum term. Only the total over the term gives the real monthly price (effective cost).
How do I calculate the real monthly cost?
Convert all one-off and extra costs over the contract term into a monthly figure: (base membership × months + joining fee + all service charges + training package) ÷ months. Fair for Fitness does this automatically for every studio near you.
What does a gym in Germany cost on average?
Across the roughly 6,414 studios we've recorded, the real effective cost averages around 42,46 € per month — well above many advertised teaser prices.
