Why the advertised price is rarely the real one
Almost every gym advertises its base rate. On top of that come a one-off sign-up fee, semi-annual service charges and sometimes a mandatory training package. Across Germany the real cost therefore averages 44,48 € per month instead of the advertised 41,42 €. Over a year that adds up to roughly 37,00 € that appear in no advertisement.
Fair for Fitness spreads these items across the contract term for every studio we record, producing an honest monthly price: the effective cost. That way you know what training at a gym will really cost before you sign up. Ranking is based on that figure alone. Placements are not for sale, and no money from studios influences the order.

- The effective cost is the true monthly price of a gym including every fee: the base membership plus the joining fee and service charge (and any mandatory training package), spread across the full contract term. A teaser price of, say, €19.90/month quickly becomes a real price of around €25/month.
- Is Fair for Fitness free?
- Yes. It’s completely free to use and needs no sign-up. We’re independent and never reorder studios in exchange for payment.
- Is Fair for Fitness the same as fair-fitness.com?
- No. Fair for Fitness (fair-for-fitness.de) is an independent price-comparison site for gym memberships, not a gym chain. We don’t run any studios ourselves; we compare every provider’s prices neutrally by effective cost.
- How many gyms do you compare?
- Our map covers over 30,300 locations in Germany, over 22,600 of them with their own website (56 major chains plus thousands of independent studios). Over 6,400 studios have a verified price on file. Of those, over 4,900 enter the effective-cost ranking, because we only compare gyms, women's gyms and EMS studios with each other and list yoga, pilates or rehab separately.
- Where do the prices come from?
- From the providers’ publicly available rates. Every figure is recorded with a date and source; we explain the exact calculation transparently on our methodology page.
