Comparing gym prices: how to find the truly cheapest membership

Updated: 15.06.2026

Comparing gyms sounds easy — until you realise the poster price is almost never the real price. Line up nothing but the advertised monthly rate and you're comparing apples with oranges. The right way is to compare by effective cost.

How do I compare gym prices the right way?

Compare by effective cost, not by the teaser price — that is the real monthly price including the joining fee, service charge and starter package spread over the contract term. Fair for Fitness works this out automatically for 6,414 studios across 508 cities and ranks them by the real price. On average the effective membership is 42,46 €/month — around 5% above the advertised base membership of 40,78 €.

Why comparing teaser prices misleads you

"From €19.90" is on the poster — but almost always more leaves your account. A one-off joining fee, a semi-annual service charge and a mandatory starter package raise the real price by 5% on average, or around 20,00 € per year. Two studios with the same teaser price can differ a lot in effective terms — which is exactly where an effective-cost comparison comes in.

Compare in three steps

  1. 1. Enter your location. Type in your postcode or city — we find every studio nearby, independents included.
  2. 2. Sort by effective cost. Instead of the teaser price we show the real monthly price including all fees over the term.
  3. 3. Filter tariffs & amenities. Contract term, sauna/classes, tariff type (annual vs. flex) — and see what you really pay per month.

What to watch for when comparing

We compare over 6,414 studios in Germany — with a source link and last-updated date for every entry. That keeps the comparison transparent and verifiable. More on the calculation under Methodology & About us.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I compare gym prices?
On Fair for Fitness you compare gyms free of charge and independently — not by the advertised teaser price but by real effective cost (incl. joining fee, service charge and starter package over the term). Just enter your postcode or city; we rank every studio nearby by the real monthly price. Data basis: 6,414 studios with a tariff, as of 03.07.2026.
What should I watch for when comparing two gyms?
Compare on an equal basis: the same contract term and the same tariff type (annual contract vs. flex) — and factor in all extra fees for both. A studio with a higher monthly rate but no joining fee or service charge can be cheaper in effective terms than a supposedly cheaper one. Fair for Fitness automatically compares the studios nearby on an equal effective-cost basis; how the effective price breaks down exactly is explained in our guide on hidden costs.
Are gym comparison sites free?
Fair for Fitness is free and independent to use. The ranking is based solely on effective cost; there is no paid placement. Sources and dates are shown per studio, all details without guarantee.
Why isn't it enough to compare only the monthly rate?
Because the advertised monthly rate is rarely the real price. A joining fee, a semi-annual service charge and a mandatory starter package push it by 5% on average — that's around 20,00 € extra per year. A studio with a higher base membership but no extra fees can end up cheaper.
